IESL Commemorates 150th Birth Anniversary of Late Eng. D.J. Wimalasurendra with Memorial Lecture on Energy Infrastructure

On the 18th of September 2024, the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) paid tribute to the visionary engineer Late Eng. D.J. Wimalasurendra, commemorating his 150th birth anniversary with a special memorial event. Widely regarded as the pioneer of hydropower development in Sri Lanka, Eng. Wimalasurendra's legacy was honored with a memorial lecture titled "Reimagining Energy Infrastructure: The Next Generation Transmission, Distribution, and Generation," delivered by the eminent Eng. (Prof.) Janaka Bandara Ekanayake, a leading expert in the field of energy systems.

The commemorative event began with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, symbolizing the start of a solemn and dignified occasion. Eng. Prof. Ranjith Dissanayake, President of the IESL, led the proceedings, which included the ceremonial garlanding of the portrait of Late Eng. Wimalasurendra. Family members of the late engineer were present at the event, adding a personal touch to the proceedings, which were also attended by past Presidents, Council Members, and distinguished engineers from across the country.

In his opening address, Eng. Prof. Dissanayake paid homage to Eng. Wimalasurendra, whose groundbreaking work in hydropower laid the foundation for the country's energy sector. "We are gathered today not only to celebrate the birth anniversary of one of Sri Lanka’s most revered engineers but also to reflect on his immense contributions to our nation’s development. Eng. D.J. Wimalasurendra was a visionary whose pioneering work in hydropower continues to illuminate our paths, both literally and figuratively. His passion for engineering innovation and his unwavering commitment to public service serve as an enduring inspiration for all of us," he remarked.

The keynote memorial lecture delivered by Eng. (Prof.) Janaka Bandara Ekanayake was the highlight of the event. Titled "Reimagining Energy Infrastructure: The Next Generation Transmission, Distribution, and Generation," the lecture delved into the future of energy systems in the face of rapidly evolving technology and growing global energy demands. Prof. Ekanayake outlined key innovations in energy infrastructure, exploring the challenges and opportunities posed by renewable energy integration, smart grids, and advanced transmission and distribution networks. Prof. Ekanayake emphasized the need for Sri Lanka to invest in next-generation energy infrastructure, echoing the innovative spirit of Eng. Wimalasurendra. "As we honor the legacy of Eng.
